Month, Occupation: January -- Within interior of room, hooded man, bearded, wearing tunic, sits in chair before fire (warming himself). Holding on to bar with left hand, he raises, with right hand, his bare left leg toward fire, above which hangs kettle on chain. He is writing his Gospel on scroll. The portion of the scroll falling over edge of lapdesk is inscribed upside-down with text from Luke 1:26; the beginning lines of text are hidden in rolls of scroll. Above him is shelf with book lying on its side. To right, sitting in doorway leading to another room, is ox, holding scroll inscribed S. LUCAM in its mouth. MARCUM and has the beginning of his gospel, starting with IN ILLO TEMPORE RECUMBENTIBUS ... (Mark 16:14), written upside-down. Kneeling before altar on pillow beside chair, she turns to face Gabriel, raising her right hand and placing left hand on opened, inscribed book next to burning candle on altar. To left of figures is vase with lily. Above, in arc of heaven, half-figure of God, crossed nimbus, holds globe in right hand and points with left hand, sending rays of light, on which dove descends toward Virgin Mary.
